Thank you for being so patient about our bill. We have been
battling with Blue Shield to get reimbursed, and it looks like
we have lost. Before treatment began, Merle called Blue Shield
to check that her caps would be paid for, and she was assured
that they would be. Your assistnat (Cheryl) also called and
received the same verbal assurance. They now claim that
Merle's coverage {\it does not} cover porcelan/metal crowns,
regardless of what anyone there told her or your office previously,
and they are not going ot pay us one penny! Needless to say, we
are quite upset at the prospect of facing an unexpected $\$$750 bill.
What we propose is that, for now, we pay you $\$$500, and if we
(or you) ever succeed in getting Blue Shield to pay anything,
then we will send you the remaining $\$$250.

We have already mailed you a check for $\$$250, so we are enclosing
a check for another $\$$250. I hope you will try to persuade Blue
Shield to stand by their employees' oral commitments to Cheryl and
Merle. Mrs McClellan, at the Pittsburgh office of Blue Shield,
was one of the people who told us that Merle {\it was} covered
for individual crowns. Her policy has a long list of exclusions,
and the only mention of crowns is:

\moveright 40pt\hjust to 270pt{\sl ``Charges for prosthetic devices
(including bridges, crowns, and space maintainers) and the fitting thereof
which were prescribed while the individual was not insured for Den\-tal Ex\-pense
Be\-ne\-fits..."}

When we called on the phone, it was this ``list of exclusions" that
Mrs. McClellan asked about, and it was on the basis of that entry
that she pronounced us covered. If you can do anything to sway them,
we would be very grateful. In any case, you have been a good dentist
to us while we lived in Pittsburgh, and I will recommend you to my
students who go to CMU.
